County Seat-Spotsylvania.
This county, lying due north from Rich- inond, was formed from Essex, King William and King and Queen in 1720, while Alexander Spotswood was colonial governor of Virginia. Culpeper and Stafford are on the north, Louisa and Hanover on the south, Carolina on the east, and Orange on the west. The Rappa- hannock river skirts its northern and the North Anna river its southern boundary, while the interior portion of the county is drained by the headwaters of the North Anna and Mattaponi. The surface is rolling and the lands are very productive, yielding good crops of corn, wheat and oats, while pro- ducts of the dairy and orchard are consid- erable. The Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac railroad touches the northeastern portion of the county, and the Potomac, Fred- ericksburg and Piedmont road extends from Fredericksburg to Orange Court House, a dis- tance of forty miles, connecting with the Southern railway, by which means a large ad- ditional trade is given to the former place. Spotsylvania lies in the gold belt of Virginia, and several mines have been in operation for some time with varying success. There are also numbers of iron mines.

This is one of the leading cities of the State. It is located on the Rappahannock river, at the head of navigation, and is half- way between Richmond and Washington. Two railroads and a navigable river afford ex- cellent transportation facilities.
There is an abundance of cheap hydro- electric power, which has attracted a num- ber of manufactories, including a silk mill, woolen mill, sumac extract works, excelsior mills, mattress factory, wood-working plants, plow works, flour mills and others. Labor conditions are good and the cost of living is low.
Fredericksburg is also an important com- mercial town, since all of the trading of a large section of fertile country is done there. There are four good banks; four newspapers; an active Chamber of Commerce.
Municipal affairs are conducted by a City Manager. The city owns its gas, water and sewer systems. Taxes are low and the citi- zens are prosperous. With its wide, clean streets; beautiful shade trees and attractive homes, Fredericksburg is a good place to live. Many good business opportunities are - awaiting development.
