Attention is directed particularly to the increase in population in this city, as well as in the outlying territory within a radius of ten miles, which, while not incorporated in the city, is being developed most rapidly as attractive residential area.
The city of Norfolk has taken on renewed life within the past fifteen years; in fact, the increase during that period has been approximately 100 per cent.
The climatic conditions are most equable, there being no such extremes of tem- perature, either summer or winter, as are found at any Atlantic coast point north thereof. In fact, climatic conditions are so attractive as to permit out-of-door work practically the entire year.
Norfolk is favored with most unusual transportation facilities, being served by eight railroads with a trackage approximating about 42.000 miles-also by twenty-seven steamship lines plying on Chesapeake Bay and tributary rivers as well as coastwise on the Atlantic and to trans-Atlantic territory.
Norfolk is particularly favored as a manufacturing point, as supplementing the trans- portation facilities referred to, Norfolk is able to furnish electric power to large users at unusually low rates.
Further, general living conditions. Excellent schools, churches, unequaled markets, all tend to make it a point where labor is easily satisfied.
Norfolk is a cosmopolitan city of unusual character, having immediately adjacent thereto seashore resorts of greater prominence than any on the Atlantic coast between New Jersey resorts and Florida.
Places of interest are numerous, and the following facts about the community are of interest:
