King and Queen was formed in 1691 from New Kent, during the reign of William and Mary, from which fact it takes its names. The county is divided from King William by the Mattaponi river, which skirts its entire south- western border. The Piankitank on the cast separates it from Middlesex. Essex county is on the north and Caroline on the northwest. There are no railroads in the county, but a steanier plying three times a week between Walkerton and West Point, at the head of York river. which has railroad connection with Richmond and daily connection by steamers with Bal- timore, affords convenient facilities of travel and transportation. The soil is very good and extensive marl beds found in various sections furnish ready means of improvement. The adaptability of the soil and the convenience of transportation by water is rapidly develop- ing the raising of fruits and trucks for market There are a number of canneries along the Mattaponi river, packing fruits and vegetables. affording a market for these products. Sheep husbandry is profitable. Corn, wheat, oats, rye and hay are successfully raised. Along the banks of the Mattaponi are the ruins of many private residences of persons distinguished in colonial days.

There is abundance of timber of pine, oak, hickory, walnut, beech and ash variety.
