By CELIA RAY
The father of W. F. Spencer, ren- eral secretary of the Y. M. O. A., was a Methodist minister, which means that the Springfield man has had many home towns and lived only a short time in each one
Mr. Spencer was born in Valen- tine, Neb, but his parents left there when he was two years of age. Be- fore he was grown he had lived in several towns in Nebraska, New York, Pennsyl- vanta, Texas and Oregon. He lived ten years in Sala- manca, N. Y .. which was the record for resi-
dence In one town. Spencer It was in the state of New York that Mr. Spencer learned his love for a hobby that he still cherishes-fishing. Next to his work, Mr. Spencer says fishing is his greatest hobby. During his youth in New York he fished in the Allegheny river and small streams
nowing into It.
There were pleasant and sad phases to the constant moving which he did in his youth as his father followed the church assign- ments of the officials.
"I really had a delightful time seeing new places and meeting new youngsters," said Mr. Spencer. .
"At the same time though there were heartbreaks, particularly after I got about 8 years old. Then I hated to leave friends I had made in the neighborhood and go to other towns to meet new boys."
During this summer Mr. Spencer made a trip back to Salamanca. It was the second time he had been there since he left 30 years ago.
When he left Salamanca, Mr. Spencer went to Baker university one year. For financial reasons he quit to work in the Y. M. C. A. in Kansas City. He kept up his study through correspondence courses. ex- tension courses and 16 summer schools and remained in Kansas City ten years as assistant secretary of the Y M. C. A.
