Sullinger of Santiago, Cal., and Mr. Bert Fautha, of Fresno, Cal., are the two daughters.

A FARM 12 tolles from Cuba, Mo., wu the birthplace of the Rev- erend : John T. Bacon, pastor emer- itus of the First Presbyterian church, and there be lived until he was 19 years of are.


Doctor Bacon's early home was an old fashioned log house-rather two log houses-with a hallway between them and an attic. Dr. Bacon He got his early education in an old log school house one-fourth mile from his home. There he attended until he was 13 years of age after which he went to school in Bourbon. Mo.


"There were many things on the farm to interest me." recalls Doctor Bacon. "There not only was the farm work, but also fishing and hunting and the like.


"I remember I didn't get, to see the first circus I ever heard of. It came to a town 10 miles away ar. * cost 50 cents admission. I didn't have money enough to go and hadn't heard about boys paying their way In by carrying water for the ele- phants."


When Doctor Bacon was 16 his father died and three years later the Springfield minister entered Mis- souri Valley college to study for his chosen career. After completing the course there he was graduated from the theological college of Cumber- land university. He then became pastor of the First Presbyterian church In Springfield, where he served 28 years before retiring be- cause of ill health to become pastor emeritus of the church.


There is a large number of promi- nent Springfield men who lived in Crawford county at the same time Doctor Bacon was there John T Woodruff went to rural school in ar adjoining district with him Johr McCormack, Courtney W Hamlin and Frank McAtee all are former residents of Crawford county Doc- tor Bacon knew as a boy


"I go back occasionally for a visit." sald Doctor Bacon. "There are many ties that still hold my Interest in the old home community."

Pioneer Who Had Spent Life In Ozarks Succumbs to Long Illness


Charles Joseph Diemer, 69, & ro- tired farmer and prominent pioneer citizen, died yesterday morning at his home, 728 East Locust street. after a lingering illness.


Mr. Diemer was born New Year's day, 1850, at Columbus, Ohio. He moved to Springfield with his par- enta in 1877 and since has made his home here.


Funeral Tuesday


Hls wife, Mrs. Belle Diemer, and an adopted daughter, Miss Georgia Turner, survive him. Mr. Diemer also is survived by one sister, Mrs. J. H. Rathbone, and two brothers, Ben J. and Elliot Diemer.


Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Tuesday at the home. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery under direction dingner Funeral home.

The marriage vows were"road" at 13:30 o'clock by the Reverend Frank Maples. The single ring ceremony was used.

The Central Christian church was the scene of a pretty wedding Sunday morning when Miss Bertha Gaye Dun- can became the bride of Dr. Loran E. - Chapman. The vowe were read at 8 o'clock by the Reverend E. C. Sechler. pastor of the church.


The bride wore a blue transparent velvet dress with rhineatona trim- ming. She carried a shower bouquet of pink roses. Her only attendant was Aira. C. R. Payne who wore a frock of black velvet with a corsage of pink rose buds.


Mr. C. R. Payne attended Dr. Chap- man as best man.


Mrs. Chapman was formerly a mem- ber of the faculty of the Springfield Business college. Dr. Chapman is the son of Mr end Mrs G. W. Chapman.

"IT'S better to reach an agreement and put it down in writing before one marries," declared Minnie M. Goodwin, 39. well-to-do Fair Grove woman, when she ad Grover Dardin. 43, of Olive, Mo., applied for a mar- rlage license at the office of recorder of deeds yesterday.


The couple came to Springfield yes- terday to get a marriage license. But before going to the courthouse. they went to the office of a notary public and had a marriage contract drawn up. Both then signed it.


They then went to the recorder's office and turned the contract over to that official to be recorded as a regular contract. Then they pur- chased the license and departed for Fair Grove, where the ceremony was performed at the bride's home last 1.1ght.


The wife, according to the terms of the contract, la to hold all the property which she now owns in her own name as "absolutely as If she had remained single and unmarried,"

J. O. Leonard, 55 years old, father of Russell Leonard of West Plains, was found' dead pear his car on & by-road just off .the state highway between Mountain Home and Cotter. Ark. according to word received here yesterday. The body was found by Russell Taylor. a farmer .. Mr. Leonard 'was a merchant and pioneer cittain of Mountain Home.


. Bruised Place on Head .

"Because there was a small bruised place on the dead man's head, a cor- oner's jury was called. A companion Who was with him Saturday night testified that the left Mr. Leonard about '9. o'clock 'sitting in his car with the engine running at the point the machine was found by Mr. Taylor.


Blame Heart Disease


Mr. Leonard was subject to heart attacks and, as there was no evidence of struggle, the coroner's jury brought in 's verdict to the effect that be came to his death from heart disease. He received the brulee when he fell, it was thought.


One daughter, Mrs. Rudolph Bod- enhammer of Mountain Home, also survives Mr, Leonard. Funeral ur- rangements were. not learned here.

Marriage of Miss Utley Is Announced


Mrs. Anna Lee Utley. 1234 North Broadway avenue, has announced the marriage of her daughter. Edith Louise,. to Mr. Henry Mize of Okla- boma City, Okla. The marriage took place Friday night in Oklahoma City. where the young couple will make their home.

Mrs. Anna K. Lawton. 78, died Tuesday afternoon at the home of her son, William &. Lawton, 1735 South Jefferson avenue. 8he is sur- vived by three sons and two daugh- tere. The some are W. E., Springfield. R. A., Summerville.Ill., and T. H., of Dallas, Texas. The daughters are Mrs. Nellie M. Koller, Jacksonville. Mich., and Mrt. Dors Flemming. of Chicago. Funil arrangements are under direction of Klingner Funeral bome.

MRS. REBA C. SAUNDERS Funeral services for Mra. Reba O. Baunders, 40, will be conducted at 3:30 o clock today at St. Paul's Meth- odist church. Burlai will be to Maple Park cemetery under direction of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral home. Mrs. Saunders, who was the wife of John Saunders of 612 South Grant avenue, died yesterday morn- ing in a Springfield hospital follow- ing a brief illness. Bhe also is sur- vived by two sons, Garnett and Bobby, and her parents. Mr. and Mrs. George Clark, of Springfield.

Funeral services for Alden R. Mc- Eldowney. 64, former Springfield resident, who died Sunday at bis home in Bedalla, will be conducted at 2:30 o'clock today at Klingner Fu- neral chapel.
