TWO OZARKS PIONEERS ARE DEAD AT AGE OF 77
Two Ozark pioneer settlers, who were cousins and boyhood compan- lons. died in widely seperated parts of the country within a few hours of each other, it was learned here yes- terduy.
J. O. Lawing, pioneer of Christian county, died at Long Beach. Cal., late Sunday night. His cousin, W. T. Lawing, of Ozark, died at 1 o'clock yesterday morning at his home in Oza:k.
Both were 77 years old, both Civil war veterans, and each was well known throughout the Ozarks region. The Lawing wamily is one of the oldest in this section of the country.

Pioneer of Ozarks Dies At Her Home Near Springfield
Mrs. Sarah J. Mitchell. 88 years old. one of the earliest residents of Greene county. died at 1:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon at her home northwest of the city on rural route No 4 after an illness of many months. Her father. Jamea Murray. was one of the first ploneers in this region, coming here from Tennessee and building a home near the present alte of Mount Pleasant church. It was In this home that Mrs. Mitchell was born.
No members of her immediate lam- ily survive the aged woman.
Funeral services will be conducted in the Mount Pleasant church at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon by the Rev W. Z. Btovall. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant cemetery under the direction of the Greenwade Undertaking com- pany of Willard. Mo.

Pollard- Rhodes Marriage Tuesday
THE marriage of Mim Mabel Rhodes and Mr. Quy 8. Pollard was solemn- ined Tuesday eating at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Rhodes, on the Ochwetter road.
Mim Rhodes, gowned in brown georgette with matching accessories and carrying a bouquet of pink roses, was followed by her alster. Miss Hagel Rhodes, wearing brick red forgette and carrying red' romes. They were met at the foot of the stairs by the groom and his best man, Mr. Frank
The ceremony was performed before an improvised altar by the Reverend w. r. Goodnight.

Newton Kirk Took Part in Major Engagements During Civil War
An old-time Civil war veteran-one wbo bas made his home in the Ozarks for more than 75 years-and who saw his prosperous business here dwindle with the coming of high- powered motor vehicles, yesterday died at bla quiet Springfield bome following ~ lingering Illness.
The mad was Newton M. Kirk. For more than 30 years he ran a dray business in Springfield until a few years ago when motor trucka caused his faithful steeds to become an- tiquated and he was forced to leare bim vocation because of the more rapid mode of transportation.
Joined Company K When the Civil war called men from the Ozarks. Kirk was one of the fint to enlist with Company K. sec- ond regiment of the Missouri light artillery. Ha fought all over the state. -
When General Lyons was killed at Wilson.Creek. Private Kirk was being burried south from Lebanon with hia fellow soldiers to the ald of the northernera. Later he was returned to . St. Louis, where at the close of the war he was in a hospital there wounded. .
His father obtained trace of him and found him, near death, In the hospital. He carried him from the bullding in hle arma. Mr. Kirk w88 placed in & apring wagon. . made aa comfortable as possible by his father. Then for many days the. two men drove across the rugged Ozarks to Lead Mine, Mo., the old Kirk home- stead.

Mr. Hirk came to Springfield more than -35 years ago. He was active for a number of years in the Q. A. R. The last seven years of his life he was confined to his home. At the time of his death he was almost totally blind.

Civil War Veteran Buried With Mates In National Grave
Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 -o'clock . this afternoon for Civil war veteran who made his home in the Ozarks for more than 75 years. Newton M. Kirk.
By the side of other comrades who have gone perore him. he was buried In National cemetery after services were conducted at the little home at 922 North Missouri avenue. W. L. Btarne, undertaker, was in charge.
Mr. Kirk came to Springfield more than 35 years ago. He was active for a number of years in the G. A. R. He was confined to his home during the past seven years and at the time of hils death yesterday was almost to- tally blind.
