STRANGE DEATH VAINLY PROBED ;. MURDER HINTED
Reed Acton, Former Spring field Man, Discovered Dead in Chicago
SCOUT ACCIDENT TALK
Relatives to Bring , Body "Here' While Inquity Continued
Launching .' potatod., following trails for crowd cold. Chicago. (polloe to. were Investigating the strang of a former Springfield man Rood Aoton, 34 years old.
The murder of Acton has provided one of the most pureling camm cona fronting Chicago's police, and until' Friday night, when Oscar Acton, brother who Lives at 828 Wont Webster. street here, arrived in Obloaco," the officers apparently were content to accept a vague report that an auto- mobile accident was responsible for his fatal injury.
Money Left In rockets
Found unconscious the night of December 16 on a sidewalk opposite hts apartment house on Chicago's wouth bide, Mr. Acton expired at 8:35 o'clock Saturday night in a hospital. Attendants said wounds about his head and body. apparently Inflicted with n "blackjack" or a heavy club. caused his death. Robbery was no motive apparently. as 026 was left in the man's pockets.
The man never recovered complete consciousness after he was attacked. To his brother's questions ho .would only mumble, "Ask' the. Lnlow. woo
...
with him. No
ment house and none of Acten'y friends will admit knowing anything of his whereabouts the night he was slugged.
Triangle Is Suggested
Officers are working upon the the- ory that the murder was a "triangle" Blaylag, committed by a hired gang ster. The theory is that Mr. Actoo and an acquaintance were both intec. ested in a young woman of consider -. able means, and that Acton seamed to be the most favored.
The probers are puzzled by the fact that Mr. Acton was hatless and cont- less when found unconscious outside his apartment. His hat and coat were found by his brother in his rooms. Another puzzling angle is the fact that no papers of Identifica- tion, no bank books or anything of that character were found in, clothes or at the apartment, He had been working for an electrical. coma pany in Chicago for several years. and relatives blieved he had afred considerable money. but no trace of Any savings was found.
Will Bring Body Here
A coroner's jury was scheduled to conduct an inquest into the daying at Chicago today. and tonight: Mrs. 8. F. Welch of Colorado Springs. .. alstar of the alain man. will leave with the body for Springfield. Fa- neral arrangements are incomplete, but burial will be in Maple Park.com. etery under direction of the Klingner funeral home.
Mr. Acton was reared in Springfield and lived here until about three years ago, when he and his wife were di- vorced. He has three children whose home is at 310 West Scott street, James, 10: Wilma, 12, and Helen. IL. Other surviving relatives include three sisters, Mra. Walch and Mrs. L. C. Bentley of Colorado Springs, and Mrs. Olara Pendrick of Crandall, . O .: D., and the ' brother, Oscar. 1 .
Oscar Acton is matter of a motor sales company at 890. East Comumner clal' street. He returned bert late- last night from Chicago, after working in investigation of the slaying, con- vinced that a deliberate attack and not an auto accident was to blame and getting the police busy." .

'A hotel boom seems to have struck Spring- " Cield:" Announcement Is made of the comple "tlou, of long slumbering plans to . enlarge the Ozark botel wille schemes are on to build two new hotels at South and Persblog and one on the aquare. All those propositions will not materialise. One project will interfere with the other, but It looks as though there will be & great expansion in the botel business bere soon. Hotels are now coming of their own accord which was not true only 29 years ago. When the city was amsller hotels were built as public enterprises. The general public was expected to take stock for the good of the city and with little Idea of getting money back. The Metropolitan hotel was built that way. It was constructed ebortly after the close of the Clvit `war and while It has had many managers the : property itmyif has passed through
Maada. Edward Finch bis mother came Into possession soon after it was bulit and finally sold it to John O'Day and It i still in possession of the O'Day estate. The Ozark hotela' on Commercial street. both the first and the second, were bullt as public. en. terprises. being encouraged by the Frisco rall- road. Neither-west fluxuctat success. The Colonial botel was erected as & public enter- price, Jobo T. Woodruff organizing the com- pany. Gradually the stock was sold and fell Into the hands of John Landers and is still part of the estate.
7 The Hotel Reames was the first important hotel erected in Springfield as purely a com- mercial enterprise, John T. Woodruff again he. ing the promoter. Later 'be followed with the Kentwood Arms. 'During the bollday xenson one wonders how 'the hotels make a living. Nearly every one has gone home and the lub bies are quiet and sometimes entirely deserted. The Ozark botel company Is playing in great luck. It has a house in Wichita and oil wus recently struck there. That has brought in thousands of transients and all the hotels are fall to capacity. . I boom of that kind generally lasts for several years.
