'MY HOME TOWN' Backward Glimpses By Spring- fieldians to Places They've Loved and Still Cherish
By CELIA RAY
SPRINGFIELD always has been the home town of R. L. Pate. manager of the City Water com- pany. He was born and reared in a home at the cor- ner of what is now Grant avenue and Lynn street.
---
But it was a very different Springfield that Mr. Pate knew as a boy from the modern city of to- day. Outstanding among his im- pressions, as he looks backward to Pate the old home town as he knew it about 45 years ago was the public square.
That was in the days when the old town pump stood where the con- crete ple today defies the city beau- tiflers. The old court house stood on the site of the Heer building and there was no pavement.
"I remember farmers used to bring meat, wood, potatoes and whatever else they had to seil Into town in their wagons, drive to the square. unhitch their teams and stay until the sales had been made." recalled Mr. Pate.
"We boys particularly liked for the farmers to bring loads of water- melons to sell. We would buy the melons and eat them there. then throw the rinds pell mel about the square. Hogs would come running about to eat them. Often people , moving from one town to another would camp in the square Farmer .
coming to town would get their mai! and collect the news to tell their families and neighbors.
"I used to go to school where the Frisco office building now stands The eather often would send two of us boys with a bucket to the rell in the center of the square after water
"Another boyhood impression was sher the sheriff or his deputy would ! come to the balcony of the cou:1 house and call out the name of lawyers or witnesses supposed to' appear in cases. It was a custom o: the court that the attorney's were not to go outside of hearing dis- tance from the balcony when they had a case likely to be called. but they were privileged lo wait around the square.
"I still remember how they used to shout out the naines of J W 5 L F Mack. sometimes they simnh called 'Alphabet' Mack: C. B Mc- Afee. Semphonlus Boyd. whom they called "Pony" Boyd, Babe Harring. ton. O H. Travers and other promi- nent attorneys. A sheriff in those days had to have a hardy voice There were no newspapers to print the pleas of the attorneys. but when one freed a man the audience usually went out and talked so much about what a remarkable speaker the attorney was he received a won- derful reputation as orator.
"Many are the changes that have taken place in Springfield in the last 45 years. It seems hardly pos- sible that so many wonderful trans- formations could take place in that time .*
