'MY HOME TOWN' Backward Glimpses By Spring- fieldlans to Places They've Loved and Still Cherish

By CELIA RAY

THE oldest Baptist church west of the Mississippi river is in the home town of Mrs. 8am W. Hargis, president af the Springfield Fed- erated W. C. T. U. and also of the Greene County Women's Republican club. The church Is the old Fee Fee Baptist church and the town is Pattonville, Mo .. Mrs. Hargis about 14 miles west of St. Louis. Mrs. Hargis was born on a ranch five miles from Richland in Pulaski county. Her father had bought the 160 acres of land and moved h.s family there because of his wife's ill health. He was unused to the type of farming required. however, and when Mrs. Hargis was only 9 months of age the family moved back to Pattonville. She lived there until she was married.

"My mother was a member of the old Fee Fee church 56 years," said Mrs. Hargis. "I attended Sunday school there until I went away to, college. I was educated in the St Charles Methodist college and then Joined the Methodist church. Te Fee Fee church was named after a creek near there, which I belleve is an Indian name.

"The old church. a one story brick structure with old fashioned gable roof. still stands. It has been well preserved and is used as a home for the sexton who takes care of the

Fee Fee cemetery. My mother and other relatives are buried in that little cemetery."

Mrs. Hargis often goes back to Pattonville on a visit. She was there October 7 and saw the old church and the little cemetery where mem- bers of her family are buried. She had opportunity to stop there while enroute to St. Louis to address the Women's Republican club of that city.

Pattonville. is little changed. Mrs Hargis found. The old church has been electrically lighted and an electric car line connects the little town with St. Louis. Her brother still owns the homestead upon which their father settled when he came from Virginia.

Mrs. Hargis also has visited the ranch in Pulaski county where she was born. but that has no memories for her as does Pattonville. because she knows of the ranch only by 2 incidents her family has told her of it.
