ATHLETIC STAR DIES SUDDENLY OF INFLUENZA
Lawton Gray, 19-Year-Old Student Here, Suddenly Stricken
NO EPIDEMIC INDICATION
Business College Student Was Basketball Team Regular
Lawton Oray. 19. popular atudant of Springfield-Draughon's Business University, and Regular forward on the basketball team of the school, died after a brief illness of Influenza about 3:30 o'clock this morning. :
Takon Suddenly 111
Gray, whose home was at Purdy. Mo., attended school yesterday morn- ing. He complained of feeling cold and told W. E. "Doc" Lunaford, coach, that he belleved he had the influ- enza. Mr. Lunsford took the boy to his room, 558 East Elm street. By evening Gray's condition had be- come so alarming that a physician was called. The physician was posl- tive that Gray was not suffering with Influenza, but a post mortem today revealed that "flu" caused his death ..
Death of the young athlete doen not in any way indicate danger of an epidemic here, physicians pointed out, because Gray apparently was killed by only a mild attack of the disease. The autopsy revealed that for years the youth, because of abnormal gland development. had little' resistance againas disease. and this condition made the Influenza attack fatal.
Gray had not played basketball for two weeks and had been out for prac- tice only twice since then. That was Monday and Tuesday. He was one of the most popular students "at "thẻ business school a catand in September.
Tummy . Not Yet Arranged

HIT BY TRUCK, BOY PARALYZED
School Lad Brought to Hos- pital Here in Critical Condition
Badly Injured as the result of being struck by a truck at Arno, Mo., a 7- year-old youth was brought to a Springfield hospital yesterday after- noon, and this morning physicians were debating whether to attempt a delicate operation to remove a blood clot from the brain.
The boy. Jack Staley, son of Carl Staley, who resides at the little com- munity six miles southwest of Arno. Mo., was returning to his home from school at Arno yesterday afternoon when he was struck by a truck driven by a man named Hartley.
It is not kuown just how the accl- dent occurred. witnesses declaring that Hartley was going at Blow speed and that he stopped the truck before It had passed the boy.
--
It is thought that the youth atart- ed to run across the road and that some of his schoolmatos called to him when the saw the truck, the youth suddenly stopping.
It is believed that the youth does not have a fractured skull, but that a blood clot has formed ot: 1 !! s brain. as his left side was paralyzed last night. If he regaina control of his left arm and leg. it is declared, an operation will not be necessary, as it will indicate that the blood clot baa dissolved.
. The youth was still. unconscious with his left alde paralyzed late this afternoon
A: X-ray taken today did not dix- cine a fracture of the skull. Dr. Wal- lu smith sald.
