ATCHISON. Population, 20,000. The judicial seat of Atchison county and the railroad center of the state is a progressive, incorporated __ city lo- cated on the left bank of the Missouri river at the point known as the Great Bend of that stream, 23 miles s. w. of

St. Joseph, Mo., 22 n. of Leavenworth and within 100 miles of the geograph- ical center of the United States. It is the fifth largest city in the state and has an altitude of 795 feet. It is sur- rounded by an exceedingly fertile tract of country producing all kinds of grain and live stock, which are exported in large quantities. Limestone and sand- stone are plentiful and a rich vein of coal, averaging three feet or more in thickness is located just outside the corporate limits. . Exceptional trans- portation facilities are furnished by the following lines which center here and radiate to all parts of the coun- try; the A., T. & S. Fe, the Burlington Route, the C., R. I. & P. and the M. P. Rys. There are many miles of street paving, chiefly vitrified brick, fire and police departments, a com- plete and effective system of water works and sewer, telephone, electric lighting and electric street railways systems. Natural gas, piped from the s. e. part of the state, is utilized for lighting, heating and · manufacturing purposes. Its churches represent the leading religious denominations and numerous stately and beautiful edi- fices adorn its streets. The educa- tional advantages of Atchison are not surpassed by any place of its size in the state, attracting large patronage from other sections. Besides its splen- did public school system supplied with 10 handsome and commodious school buildings equipped with every modern appliance and including a new high school costing $150,000, there is the College Preparatory School, a private academy, the Western Theological Seminary, the Midland College (English Lutheran), the Sacred Heart School, the Mt. St. Scholastica's Acad- emy, St. Benedict's College, St. Louis College and the Ursuline Academy. The Soldiers' Orphans Home, a state institution, is located n. e, of the city. There are 4 banks, a trust company, 2 daily and weekly newspapers, an opera house and 6 hotels, the Byram being one of the best in the west and. the recognized commercial headquarters. A public libary of several thousand volumes is maintained and the city has a full representation of the secret
