IOLA. Population, 12,000. The judicial seat of Allen county is an in- corporated city, located on the A., T. & S. Fe, the M., K. & T. and M. P. Rys., and on the Neosho river, in the heart of one of the greatest nat- ural gas fields in the country, 44 miles w. of Fort Scott, and 105 s. w. of Kansas City. It is a modern, up-to- date, well paved, well watered city, with natural gas for domestic and commercial purposes and possessing all the conveniences to be furnished by electricity and water power. There are 5 graded school buildings and a high school; the church edifices are numerous and many of them of more than ordinary cost and beauty. Iola

has 4 very prosperous banks, an opera house, first class hotels, local and long distance telephone service, a hospital, a public library, electric street railway, good sewerage, fire department, 2 daily and 3 weekly newspapers, etc. The availability and minimum cost of gas for manufactur- ^ing purposes and the excellent trans- portation facilities of Iola have at- tracted immense manufactories em- ploying thousands of men. This place is headquarters for 8 cement factories making 25,000 barrels of cement daily and employing over 3,000 men. Here too are located 9 zinc smelters, pro -- ducing 33 per cent of the world's zinc spelter and employing 1,800 men. Other important industries embrace flour mills, broom factory, brick and tile works, ice and cold storage plant, rug factory, iron works, foundry, planing mill, bottling works, candy and extract factory and creamery. An electric railway line connects Iola with La Harpe about 9 miles east, passing through the town of Gas and with branches to Bassett and Con- crete. Tel., W. U. Exp., Pacific and W. F. & Co. H. L. Henderson, post- master.
