538 Junction City R. L. POLK & CO.'S Junction City

1

JUNCTION CITY. Population, 7,000. The judicial seat of Geary county, is a progressive incorporated city located on the U. P. and M., K. & T. Rys. (depots adjacent) at the confluence of Smoky Hill and Republican riv- . ers, 139 miles w. of Kansas City. Altitude, 1,079 feet. It dates it settle- ment from 1858 and was incorporated in 1859. The city is lighted by elec- tricity, has an excellent system of wa- ter works, purest of water and a per- fect sewerage system with resultant good health, a thoroughly equipped fire department, numerous churches, excellent graded schools, a high school, a German Lutheran school, St Francis Xavier school (Roman Catholic), a handsome and commodious court house, city hall, an opera house and good hotels, one of which, The Bartell House, modern and up-to-date in all its appointments, is considered one of the best hotels in the State and is a favor- ite with commercial travelers. With three such papers as the Republic, Sentinel and Union to put Junction City's advantages before the public, and with its finances managed and fostered by three excellent banks, it is not surprising that the city has forged constantly ahead. Among the enter- prises now in successful operation are two flouring mills (one of which is operated by water power furnished by the Smoky Hill river), several eleva- tors, ice plant, creamery, machine shops, carriage and wagon works, etc. Fort Riley, four miles east, on a reser- vation of nearly 20,000 acres, one of the most important military posts and army schools in the United States, is connected with Junction City by elec- tric railway. Magnesian limestone of superior quality is abundant through- out the county, the largest quarry be' ing near here. Clay of excellent qual- ity for pressed brick is plentiful in the immediate vicinity. Grain, flour, live stock, fruit, grapes, produce and build- ing stone are shipped. Tel., W. U. Exp., Am. and Pacific. Telephone con- nection. J. B. Callen, postmaster.
