It is lighted `by electricity, has water works, fire department, an opera hall, admirably . managed public schools, Brumback Academy, churches of the Baptist, Christian,' Methodist, Presbyterian and United Brethren denominations, 3 banks, 2 daily newspapers, the Repub- lican and the Walnut Valley Times, each publishing a weekly edition, and the Advocate, weekly only. Magnes- ian limestone is abundant in the vicin- ity. extensive quarries have been de- veloped and large quantities of this


stone shipped. Butler county is a first class agricultural county, corn, Kafir-corn, oats and winter wheat be- ing among the leading staples pro- duced, and it ranks first in acreage and value of sorghum for forage or grain and Kafir-corn. Also leads in acreage of alfalfa and in tons and value of prairie hay. Live stock is an important in- dustry, the county leading in number and value of cattle.
