Designated Hays by the postal and railroad service, is the coun- ty seat and principal City of Ellis county, one of the most prosperous
counties of central-western Kansas. It is situated on the main line of the U. P. R. R., 289 miles from Kansas City. It is lighted by electricity, has an ex- cellent system of water works, fire department, telephone exchange, good sewerage system, a modern and up-to- date public free school system, the St. Joseph College, opportunities for re- ligious training equal to the best, an opera hall, 2 banks, a flour mill, grain elevators, machine shops, the Bruns- wick Hotel, headquarters for commer- cial men and modern in every respect, and 3 weekly newspapers, Free Press, News and Republican. The Western Normal School, located here, while yet in its infancy, leads the institutions of the state for high rate of growth and the numerous courses afforded by this institution are attracting students from all parts of the Sunflower state. A western branch of the State Experi- ment Station is located on the old Fort Hays Reservation. This is the largest agricultural experiment station in the world, comprising 4,500 acres. Ellis is one of the foremost counties in Kan- sas in the production of winter wheat. Corn, oats, barley, alfalfa and sorghum are important crops.
