ELLSWORTH. Population, 2,000. The judicial seat of Elisworth county, is a progressive, incorporated city, ad- vantageously located on the U. P. and St. L. & S. F. R. Rs. (depots 1 mile apart) and on the Smoky Hill river, 156 miles from Topeka, 206 from Atch- ison and 223 from Kansas City. It dates its settlement from 1867, was in- corporated in 1868 and is the trading point for a particularly fertile agri- cultural and live stock section. The city owns and operates its own elec- tric light plant and water works sys- tem and there is local and long dis- rance telephone facilities, churches of the leading religions denominations, excellent educational advantages, an opera house, a handsome and commo- dious court house, 2 banks, a flouring mill, 4 grain elevators, a salt plant with a daily capacity of 500 barrels, a machine shop, wagon works, etc. The streets are paved with by-product or waste of salt works, making a dust- less macadam. The Mother Bicker- dyke Home for Widows and Orphans of Deceased Soldiers is located here. Coal and building stone are found in the vicinity. Two weekly newspapers, the Messenger and the Reporter, are published. These are excellent jour- nals, none better printed and edited or more devoted to the local interests of their city, of which they are invalu- able exponents. The Commercial Club is alive to every interest of the city and being composed of active, in- telligent business men in every de- partment of trade or profession, loses no opportunity to advise and assist all worthy enterprises which may need its good offices.
