BLUE RAPIDS. Population 2,000. In the valley of "The Beautiful Blue," on an elevated . undulating plateau commanding a magnificent view of bluff and valley scenery, stands this handsome, wide-awake, progressive and most rapidly growing little city in northeastern Kansas. There are reasons why, though located in the very heart of the noted "Corn Belt"-the richest section of . the State, its neighboring towns showing growth and prosperity-this one had for a generation remained dormant. It had two great natural advantages
not found elsewhere: 1st, the best water power west of the Missouri river in Kansas or Nebraska. 2d. Prac- tically inexhaustible beds of gypsum rock of a quality superior to that of any rival between there and Nova Scotia. Either of these is enough to give any town marked prestige. In combination the value of each is multiplied, thus putting Blue Rapids in a class by itself as it stands today. But all these weary years, until Octo- ber, 1904, this lusty young giant was tied hand and foot in the meshes-of litigation. Now it is free, and is more than making up for lost time. Four great plaster mines and mills are al- ready engaged in converting gypsum into its marketable products. Two ele- vators and one of the best flouring mills in the country respond to the demands of the farmers. The mercan- tile business of the town is so revolu- tionized that it already draws trade through towns that were its rivals. A .. glove and mitten factory and 2 ma- chine shop's have recently located, while other factories are looking this way with favor. A cigar factory has also recently been added to the city's business interests. The two rival rail- way systems-the Union Pacific, from north to south, and the Missouri Pa- cific from east to west-get more busi- Iless at Blue. Rapids than from any other place within forty miles, and furnish excellent shipping facilities in all directions. The present dam, though inadequate, affords power for cheaper lights and city water than any other town in Kansas, as well as furnishing power for operating th- Electric Plaster Mills. Arrangements are now in progress by western cap- italists to fully develop and utilize this great power at an expense of over $200,000. This cheap power means not merely the erection of new plas- ter mills . and factories for converting gypsum into other valuable products, crayons, hard wall plaster, white fin- ishing plaster, stucco and even artis- tic marble, but also numerous other establishments, giving work to many employes and resulting in the con- tinued growth of the city. The people of Blue Rapids are wideawake and in- telligent, and while no pretense is

church buildings. The schools are ex- cellent, the High School being not merely the best in the county, but one of the best in the State. The grade schools are now being greatly en- larged to accommodate the rapidly in- creasing number of pupils. A first-class entertainment course is maintained in the winter and this summer the Busi- ness Men's Club established a Chau- tauqua system, which has proved to be a marked success and will be perma- nent. Good health is the most import- ant consideration in selecting a new home. Many cities, because subject to inundation by floods, or because the prevalent south winds of summer come laden with miasma and malaria from stagnant water or low river beds, are certain to be unhealthy. But, while the general course of the Blue river is southward, it runs eastward through Blue Rapids, and over the high bluffs on the south of the city come only pure ozone and health. There is a splendid system of water works owned and operated by the city, fire department, opera house, 2 banks, good hotels (the Albion being up-to-date and first-class in every par- ticular and where every effort is made to please the traveling public), lodges .of the leading fraternal societies, etc. Telephone service reaches every sec- tion and mail facilities are extensive and all that could be desired. The business success and progress in all lines of industry, finance and com- merce which Blue Rapids is so greatly enjoying is in very large measure the result of earnest and associated effort. That in matters of large concern union is the prerequisite of strength .is an axioni no less true than trite, and the successful and active business men of the city have after their prac- tical manner harnessed this truth to active service. The Blue Rapids Busi- ness Men's Club has been a factor of constantly increasing importance and potency in the work of developing the industries and interests of the city.
