R. L. POLK & CO.'S

Goodland

after started, it must have care and attention to produce good results. The settlers in this county who have put out fruit and given it reasonable care, have fine orchards and abundance of fruit as a result. It will be a surprise to many an eastern man who has not seen it, to know that the farmers of Sherman county are raising some of the finest apples, peaches, cherries, plums, strawberries, etc., and that without - irrigation. The climate is healthful in the extreme and many .people come here with bronchial and pulmonary troubles and find speedy and permanent relief when the change is made before it is too late to be of any avail. Quite a large share of sickness here comes of natural, acci- dental and. hereditary causes, and

where the person has brought the germs of disease in their system from other and less healthful localities. The winters here are mild and frequently farm operations can be carried · on every month in the year. The sum- mers are warm, but such is the rarety of the atmosphere and the constant breezes blowing that no one is seri- ously incommoded, especially as the nights are always cool and refreshing. On the Smoky and Beavers water can be secured at from ten to sixty feet and on the higher divides at the aver- - age depth of 100 feet. The supply is

-

abundant and the quality is splendid, clear as crystal and entirely free from all deleterious substances. There is little difficulty in securing, at moder- ate cost a good well, as parties make a specialty of putting down both bored and tubular wells, while the windmill furnishes the power. A good well and windmill can be secured at froni $75 to $150, with the tank for the water- ing of stock. The water supply is in- exhaustible and a good well never runs dry, regardless of whether the season is wet or dry. A Niagara of water flows ceaselessly under all the country. The average rainfall is a lit- tle over 20 inches. This amount of rainfall coming timely will insure both crops of small grain, corn and forage. For the farmer, diversified farming and stock raising ; a sure winner. One man can plow and seed as much in Sherman county as three

men can do in eastern states. Horses. mules and cattle can be raised here with but very little expense and trouble and at a big profit. It is a surprise to the new comer to see the excellent grade of mules and horses that are being raised here at practic- ally no cost. The dairy business is a money maker in itself, and nearly every farmer in Sherman county has a monthly cream check of from $40 up, and the cost of keeping the cows is nothing. There is no country where the raising of poultry is more profitable, and the mining districts of Pueblo and Denver, Colorado, afford an excellent market for produce and poultry the year round. There is no place where money can be made eas- ier and faster than by raising sheep. and statistics show that a man can double his money in a short time rais- ing sheep in this country. It is not surprising that the tide of immigra- tion is to Western Kansas, when the man with limited means has such un- equaled opportunities to engage in a business for himself and to own his own home and be his own master. Every farmer, young or old, should own his farm and in a land where crops will grow and orchards will bloom, if he would enjoy living. It takes time to fit up a home and the sooner you get one the better. Don't put it off till the landlord gets all the profits, but come at once to Sherman county while farms are cheap and get a home, for land is rapidly advancing. Goodland has churches of the Cath- olic, Christian, Congregational, Epis- copal and Methodist denominations, exceptional educational advantages. including a new $20,000 high school building, Masonic hall, 2 opera houses. 3 banks-Farmers' National Bank. First National Bank and Goodland State Bank-first-class hotels, water works, fire department, electric light, fine sewerage system, paved streets. numerous well stocked special and general stores that offer metropolitan opportunity for selection, and ably

mwnts aded to the city of Goodland during the past three years; among others, the improvements of the rail- road company, the erection of one of the finest electric light systems, at a cost of $30,000; the erection of one. of the finest standpipes, together with Improvements in the city waterworks at a cost of $13,000; the consolidation and improvements of the Goodland Telephone Company, which extends to all parts of the county, the northeast, southeast and southwest, the stock being all owned and controlled by the citizens of Goodland, and the farm- ers of Sherman county. During the past three years there has been erect- ed over 300 buildings in the city of Goodland, a great many two-story brick buildings ,among these the Ma- sonic Temple, a brick opera house, to- gether with many other brick busi- ness buildings, and many miles of ce- ment sidewalk; also one of the finest cement jail buildings found in the state. Goodland is represented in a fraternal way by lodges of the Ma- sons, Eastern Star, Woodmen, Odd Fellows, Rebekahs, Red Men, Knights of Pythias, Knights and Ladies of Se- curity, Royal Neighbors and a G. A. R. Post. Goodland being a division point on the Rock Island, all of the orders and lodges found among rail- road men are represented here. The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, Order of Railroad Conductors, Broth- erhood of

Locomotive Engineers, Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, and many others, all have their quarters here and are all well attended. It is an established

fact, known among all men, that when once a man becomes established with an order which he likes, should he wish to make a change in his location, he will naturally be attracted and drawn to that place where his order has a strong following, and where he can mix and associate with them. Goodland offers this advantage, and the secretaries of each lodge will be glad to communicate with any non- resident members who desire infor- mation such as in their power to give. Goodland owes much to the real estate men who have been content to pro- mote the general welfare of the city and county without forcing the market and creating artificial prices. No other class of business men have worked so conscientiously and with such broad views as these same real estate men for the ultimate good of the whole community. They have established and maintained a high business tone in their dealings and may be depended upon to give intelligent attention to persons seeking information and to be entirely fair and dependable in all matters. The Commercial Club is an active and influential organization of leading business men. It looks after every kind of industrial and commer- cial proposition and puts no limits upon its activities where the interests of Goodland are concerned. Tel., W. U. Exp., U. S. James E. Stevens, postmaster. -
