COLUMBUS. Population, 4000. The judicial seat of Cherokee county, is a rapidly growing and progressive in- corporated city located on the St. L. & S. F. and M., K. & T. Rys. (depots 200 feet apart), 50 miles south of Fort Scott and 148 from Kansas City. Coal of an excellent quality found within three miles of the city is extensively mined, and besides supplying the local demand is shipped in large quantities. There is plenty of natural gas for manufacturing and domestic purposes and within a few miles is located the largest water-power electric plant in the West, operating 11,000 horse-power used for power and light. Its churches embrace the leading religious denom- inations, while the public schools are of superior excellence. There is a $25,- 000 high school building and the city has a library of over 1,200 volumes in a building costing $15,000. The city is lighted by electricity and gas, has an excellent system of water works, fire department, 2 banks, an opera house, a daily newspaper, the Advocate, and 3 weeklies, Advocate, Enterprise and Modern Light. Among other interests are flour mills, carriage and wagon works, vinegar works, canning factory, brick and tile works, paint factory, the largest cigar factory in the State, ma- chine shops, bottling works, creamery, etc. Columbus is the receiving and distributing point for a rich agricul- tural and grazing section and large
