GARDEN CITY. Population, 4,500. -The judicial seat of Finney county, is situated on the north bank of the Arkansas river and on the A., T. & S. Fe and N. K. & S. Rys., 419 miles s. w. of Kansas City. It dates its set- tlement from 1884 and has become the center of both the beet rootsugar industry and the irrigating system of s. w. Kansas. The city is lighted by electricity, has water works, excellent sewerage, fire and police departments, a county high school and graded pub- lic schools, a public library, a hospital, an opera hall, 3 banks and 3 news- papers. A sugar beet factory, cost- ing, with its accessories, upwards of a million dollars, is in operation here,
and the operating company has bought and leased thousands of acres of land in the vicinity of Garden City for the raising of sugar beets. This factory has a daily capacity of 1,000 tons of beets, from which are made 200,000 ·pounds of refined granulated sugar. About 5,000,000 gallons of water, sup- plied from wells tapping the under- flow and forced to the surface by com- pressed air, are used daily. Other in- dustries are a flouring mill, planing mill, machine shop, creamery, feed, mill, ice plant, electric light and pow- er plant and grain elevator. Stages daily to Santa Fe, Essex and Emi- nence and tri-weekly to Terryton Tel., Postal and W. U. Exp., W., F. & Co. Telephone connection. I. L. Die- sem, postmaster.
