The judicial seat of Lyon county, is an in- corporated city located somewhat south and west of the center, between the Neosho and Cottonwood rivers, 61 miles from Topeka, 112 from Atchi- son and 128 from Kansas City, at the junction of the Howard and Ottawa branches of the A., T. & S. Fe Ry. with the main line and on the M. K. & T. Ry. The city is lighted by elec- tricity and gas, has water works, a fire department equal to any emer- gency that may arise, paved streets, excellent natural drainage and a sew- er system touching every part. The churches embrace the leading relig- jous denominations and have' commo-
dious houses of worship. The educa- tional advantages of Emporia are not surpassed by any other place of its size in the state. Besides its splendid public school system, supplied with a high and several public school build- ings, there is the College of Emporia (Presbyterian), the State Normal school and a business college. There. are 3 banks, an opera house, first class hotels, a public library, 2 col- lege libraries a daily and 2 weekly newspapers and several college pub- lications. The city has woolen and flouring mills, foundries and machine shops, carriage and wagon works, ice plants, broom factories, planing mill, creamery, brick and tile works, cor- rugated culvert factory, marble and iron works, etc. This is the receiv- ing and distributing center for an agricultural and stock raising district .of rare fertility and large quantities of grain, live stock, produce and fruit are shipped.
