INDEPENDENCE. Population, 17,- 000. The judicial seat of Montgomery county, is an important manufactur- ing city, located on the A., T. & S. Fe and M. P. Rys. (depots 1/4 mile apart), and on the Verdigris river, S5 miles s. w. of Fort Scott and 161 s. of Kan- sas City. Montgomery county is lo- cated in one of the greatest natural gas and oil fields in the world. Gas wells are in practically all parts, and this gas; utilized as fuel plays a very important part in 'converting into fin- ished product the mineral resources of the county and in manufacturing. In this vicinity first-class limestone, and shale for the inanufacture of the best Portland cement are abundant. There are enormous beds of clay shale which is manufactured into high-grade brick, tile and pottery, sand for glass is plentiful, extensive beds of coal lie to the north and numerous oil wells have strong flows. Independence is an active, thriving place, well supplied with all modern conveniences and im- provements.
