Degrees of D.D. from Brown University in 1868 and LL.D. from Princeton in 1894. (Married Caroline Townsend Lawrence in 1853, who died in 1898.) Ordained to Baptist ministry in 1856. Pastor in Flushing, L. I., 1856-8, and in New York City, 1860-6. Professor of Hebrew at Crozer Theologi- cal Seminary, Philadelphia, Pa., 1864-74; same chair at Rochester Theological Seminary since 1875. Member of the American committee of revision of the Old Tes- tament.
