Studied law and was admitted to the Bar in 1859. (Married.) Served as district attorney of Al- bany County and as corporation counsel to the City of Albany. Supreme Court Justice of the State of New York, 1883-6; Associate Justice of the New York Court of Appeals, 1886-95; Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court since 1895. Now in independent practice in New York City. Author of several works on chemistry. Member of various scientific societies.
