During the period 1863 to 1873 had charge of a number of large collieries, and during a portion of this time was engineer to the Hazard Mfg Co., and had built for them from his own original designs their large machines for making wire rope; also designed and built a number of coal breakers into which he introduced important improve- ments; on his advice the locomotive was first intro- duced in the anthracite mines (mines of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Co., near Mauch Chunk, Pa.) in 1869. In 1871, he organized the American Institute of Mining Engineers and served for a time as its pres- ident. Acquired an interest in the Scientific Pub- lishing Co., publishers of "The Engineering and Min- ing Journal" in 1873, and became one of its editors and general manager of the company; subsequently be- came its president and managing editor of its publi- cation, which, under his administration, has been for a quarter of a century recognized in every country as the leading mining and metallurgical paper and the highest professional authority in its field in the world. Commenced the publication of "The Mineral Industry, Its Statistics, Technology and Trade" in 1892, of which eight annual volumes have appeared and which in 1898, was awarded the gold medal of the Societé d'Encouragement pour L'Industrie Nationale de France, a medal which is given for the work which has exercised during the six preceding years the greatest influence on the progress of French industry. Has made several elaborate topographical and rail- road surveys and contour maps, one of which (that of the Wyoming Valley coal fields) has since been adopted by the United States and Pennsylvania Geo- logical Surveys.
