SERRELL, EDWARD WELLMANN-Civil Engi- neer, 8 Livingston place, New York City. Born abroad, of American parents, Nov. 5, 1826. Educated in acad- emies. (Married Jane, daughter of Rev. Jesse Pound, 1848.) Was assistant engineer in the construction of the Erie Railway, assistant engineer on the Panama Survey in 1848, and chief engineer in the construction of the Niagara Bridge, Hoosac Tunnel and many other important undertakings. Organized the 1st Regiment, United States Volunteer Engineers, at the outbreak of the Civil War, and went to the front in command of same, becoming colonel of engineers; was chief engineer and chief of staff in the Army of the James; took part in 126 engagements and was bre- vetted with the rank of brigadier-general. Devised and built the "Swamp Angel" batteries; also many such useful inventions as armor plate, gun carriages, electric coast defences, etc. Now engaged in private practice and is consulting engineer to several corpora- tions.


SERVISS, GARRETT PUTNAM-Astronomer and Author, 8 Middagh street, Brooklyn. Born in Sharon Springs, N. Y., March 24, 1851. Educated at Cornell (B.S., '72) and at Columbia Law School (LL.B., '74).
