Descended from one of the oldest Dutch families of New Am- sterdam. Harmen Visscher, born in 1619, in Hoorn, Holland, came to this country previous to 1644, where he married, his wife being Hester Tjerkse, and be- came the town surveyor of Albany. Died some time previous to 1693. Bastiaen Visscher, son of Harmen Visscher, married Dirkje Metselaer of Albany, and their son, Teunis Visscher, was born in Albany, April 3. 1702, and died in 1781. Teunis Visscher married Machtel Lansing in 1727, and their son, Bastiaen, who became a man of wealth and high standing, was born in Albany, 1728. His wife was Engeltje Van Den Bergh, daughter of Mathias Van Den Bergh, whom he married in 1750. Matthew Visscher, their son, was born in Albany, 1751, was a counsellor-at-law and fre-

quently held public office. Also served as second lieu- tenant and captain in the 2d Company of Militia of Albany, in the Revolutionary War, and afterwards as clerk to the Committee of Safety. After the war was town clerk, clerk of the mayor's court and of the Court of Common Pleas of Albany. His wife was Lydia Fryer, whom he married in 1772. Sebastian Visscher, son of Matthew, was born in Albany in 1773 and died in 1824. He was admitted to the practice of law in 1795, and appointed master-in-chancery in 1812. Was also clerk of the State Senate and colonel of the 89th Regi- ment of New York Militia. He married Rosanna Shipboy in 1797, and was the father of seven children; the fifth child and third daughter being Cecilia Viss- cher, who married Ezra Wheeler in 1842 and died in 1848.) Educated at Columbia (A.B., '65, and A.M.). (Single.) Retired early from business life and de- votes himself to study and literature. Served as cap- tain and commissary in the 9th Regiment, N. G. N. Y., for seven years. Director National Bank of Coxsackie. Held commission of major in 110th Regiment, New York Militia, under General Salsbury of Catskill in 1844, having previously served in all minor offices. Was president of the Board of Trustees of Union Free School of Coxsackie at time of its organization in 1880. Has been named as executor in a number of wills.
