JONES, PATRICK HENRY-Retired Lawyer, Ann street, Port Richmond, S. I. Born in Ireland, Nov. 20, 1830. Came to the United States with his parents at the age of ten years. Studied law in the office of Addi- son C. Rice, was admitted to the Bar in 1856, and practiced in Ellicottville. Enlisted as second lieuten- ant in the 37th New York Volunteers at the outbreak of the Civil War; became adjutant and major of the regiment and later colonel of the 154th New York Vol- unteers. Was commissioned brigadier-general in 1864 and remained in the service until the close of the war, when he resigned and resumed his law practice. Was elected clerk of the New York Court of Appeals in 1865. Was postmaster at New York City during President Grant's first term (1869-72); also served for a time as register of New York County.
