ROCKWOOD, WILLIAM THOMPSON - Lawyer and Financier, 378 Broadway, Saratoga Springs. Born in Newark, Wayne Co., N. Y. (Son of Dr. E. H. and Eliza [Thompson] Rockwood.) Educated in public schools of Newark and at University of Rochester. (Married Emily Nash, 1867.) Soon after graduation opened an academy in Americus, Sumter Co., Ga., the growth of which was very rapid until closed by the interference of the Civil War. Being a member of the local military organization, was ordered to march with it to aid in attempted capture of United States forts. He refused to obey and departed for the North. Was admitted to the Bar in St. Paul, Minn., in 1862; com- inanded two companies of State troops in Sioux Indian War; mustered into United States service and com- manded patrol in the Northwest for purpose of pre- venting the Chippewa Indians from joining the Sioux; was ordered with his command to join the troops under command of General Alfred Sully, whose command proceeded beyond the Missouri River, and engaged in the heaviest Indian battles fought on the American continent. After repeated encounters with the Indians, which finally effected the complete subjection of the Sioux, the command returned to Fort Ridgely, Minn., in Nov. 1864, concluding an active Indian service of
over two years. Was ordered to Murfreesboro, Tenn., where he was detached and appointed judge advocate of a military commission on which he served until April, 1865, when he received his discharge from the army. Entered service of the United States Treasury, becoming corresponding secretary, then inspector of customs for North Carolina and later special agent, and general special United States Treasury agent. Entered wholesale drug business in Chicago under firm name of Mears & Rockwood, and later of Rockwood & Blocki. Became resident of Saratoga in 1873; was an organizer and vice-president of Citizens' National Bank.

Artist on the staff of the New York "Daily Graphic," 1872-3, and of "Harper's Weekly," 1877-9. Made political car- toons for "Life" for two years and for the World's Fair edition of "Puck" in 1893. Since 1893 has been cartoonist on "Harper's Weekly." Member Players' Club, Ohio Society and Century Association.
