Principal of a graded school in South Charleston, Ohio, 1856-8; editor and proprietor of the Xenia (Ohio) "News," 1858-60; legis- lative correspondent of the Cincinnati "Gazette," Cleveland "Herald" and other newspapers, 1860-1; army correspondent of the Cincinnati "Gazette," 1861-2; was captain and volunteer aide on the staff of Major-Gen- eral Thomas A. Morris during the first West Virginia campaign and on the staff of General W. F. Rosecrans during the second West Virginia campaign. Wrote the only detailed account by a Northern army corre- spondent of the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, 1862. Clerk to the Military Committee of the House of Rep- resentatives, 1862-3; librarian of the House of Repre- sentatives, 1863-6; Washington correspondent and edi- torial writer on the Cincinnati "Gazette," 1862-8. Be- came a member of the editorial staff of the New York "Tribune" in 1868; managing editor, 1869-71; editor-in- ·chief, 1872; principal proprietor since 1873. Was elected In 1878 by the New York Legislature to the Board of Regents to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Governor John A. Dix. Declined mission to Germany when formally offered by President Hayes and Secre- tary Evarts, in 1879, and again when offered by Presi- dent Garfield in 1881; but accepted mission to France offered by President Harrison, in 1889, resigning after three years' service to return to private life. Nomi- nated for Vice-President of the United States on the ticket with Benjamin Harrison by the Republican Na- tional Convention in 1892. Was United States Special Ambassador to Great Britain for the Queen's Jubilee in 1897, and United States Peace Commissioner at Paris for the arrangement of a treaty with Spain in 1898. Author of "Ohio in the War" and "After the War; a Southern Tour;" also of a large number of magazine articles and published addresses, including "The Ter- ritory with Which We Are Threatened," "Some Conse- quences of the Last Treaty of Paris," "Our New Du- ties," "Later Aspects of Our New Duties," "Schools of Journalism," "Newspaper Tendencies," "The Scholar in Politics," etc. Member Metropolitan, University, Union League, Lotos, Grolier, American Yacht, Delta Kappa Epsilon, Riding, New York Farmers' and Re- publican Clubs, Historical, New England, St. Andrew's, Ohio, American Geographical, National Sculpture and Dunlap Societies, Century Association, New York Bot- anical Gardens, Archaeological Institute of America, Metropolitan Museum of Art and numerous others.
