At ten years of age was driving grocery wagon in Jersey City; in 1875 was shoveling gravel on a night construction train on the Long Island Railroad; then made inspector of ties and road bed; was appointed switch man at Bushwick, and when off duty secured the privilege of doing a part of the work of the clerks at station headquarters; was soon discharged, but again employed and sent to another division, where he swept and cleaned the cars, was made brakeman and afterward conductor, but was discharged because of an accident for which he was partly responsible. Began work again as brakeman on same railroad; be- came a conductor on the New York and Northern be- tween New York and Yonkers, in 1881, and was rapidly advanced until within a year or two he practically managed the road. On an inspection trip, William C. Whitney, Daniel Lamont and others were conducted by Mr. Vreeland, whose ability aroused their interest in him, and four months later he was elected presi- dent, director and general manager of the Houston Street, West Street and Pavonia Ferry R.
