(Of New England parentage; on his father's side, his ancestors were descendants of the Pilgrims of Plymouth and Marshfield.) Educated at Maine State Seminary ('64), Amherst College ('69) and, in Europe, in Athens, Hei- delberg, Leipzig, Berlin and Leiden. Honorary degree of Ph.D. conferred by Cornell University in 1879. sistant professor of German at Cornell University un- til 1881, when he was elected full professor of the German language and literature, which position he still holds. Visited Europe in 1877-8, 1881, 1887-8 and 1896. His first publication was a work entitled "The Frisian Language; a IIistorical Study" (1879), in recog- nition of which he was elected a member of the So- ciety for the Frisian Language and Literature of Hol- land, and of the Frisian Society of History, Antiqui- ties and Philology. He also published the introduc- tion to "Life and Genius of Goethe" (1886), and an edi- tion of Goethe's "Herrmann and Dorothea" (1892), "The History of Cornell University (1894), "Uhland's Poems" (1896) and "Sources of Goethe's Printed Text" (1898). ITas contributed numerous articles upon litera- ture and the history of education to "The Nation," "The Century," "Harper's Magazine," "American Journal of Philology," "The Goethe Jahrbuch," Lon- don "Academy," "Atlantic Monthly," "Science," "The Critic," "The Independent" and other periodicals, and to the transactions of learned societies. His article on the "House of Orange" was translated into Dutch and published in Holland to commemorate the seventieth birthday of the King. His contributions to the phil- ology of the Netherland languages led to his election as foreign member of the Netherland Society of Liter- ature, an honor which at that time had only been conferred upon eight Americans since the foundation of the Society. Is now general editor of Macmillans' "German Classics" and a contributor to the "Goethe Lexicon" published by the Goethe Society of Germany. Member American Philosophical and American Phil- ological Societies, Modern Language Association of America, Goethe Society of Weimar, Germany, and of the Psi Upsilon Fraternity.


HEWITT, ABRAM STEVENS - Iron Manufac- turer, 17 Burling Slip, New York City; residence 9 Lex- ington avenue. Born in Haverstraw, Rockland Co., N. Y., July 31, 1822. Educated at Columbia (A.B., '42 and LL.D., '87). (Married the only daughter of Peter Cooper in 1855.) Member of the firm of Cooper, Hewitt & Co. Was a representative in Congress from the State of New York from 1874 to 1886, in which year he was elected mayor of the City of New York and served one term (1887-8). Organized the Cooper Union, founded by Peter Cooper, and has been its sec- retary for more than forty years. Has been twice president of the American Institute of Mining Engi- neers; was official United States Commissioner at the French Exposition of 1867. President Trenton Iron Co., United Smelting Co. and New York and Greenwood Lake P .. R. Co .; vice-president New Jersey Steel and Iron Co .; director Erie R. R. Co., Lehigh Coal and Navigation Co., Alabama Coal and Iron Co. and of various mining companies. Member Metropolitan, City, Church, Union, Engineers', Tuxedo and Players' Clubs, Down Town and Century Associations and of various scientific bodies.
