Member of Tammany Hall General Committee; candidate for Con- gress on People's Party ticket, 1894; spoke throughout New York State under auspices of Democratic Na- tional and State Committees, 1896; delegate to State Convention of Bryan and Sewall Clubs, Buffalo, 1896, and has been otherwise prominent in political affairs. Was a founder and first librarian of the Theosophical Society, 1876; an incorporator of the People's Institute; vice-ruler and a founder of New York Thirteen Club; past delegate to District Assembly 49, Knights of Labor; trustee of New York Press Club, 1876-7, 1896- 1900. Is Grand Sheikh Fakir of Grand Council of Sheikhs of Kaaba Defenders of the Mystic Shrine, and Sheikh-ul-Allah of New York Khanakeen of same; thirty-third and last degree and honorary member of Supreme Grand Council of Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Masons; also Deputy Grand Commander for Ala- bama of the same, and first grand master of ceremo- nies of Cerneau Consistory No. 1; ninety-fourth degree of Rite of Memphis; grand representative of Great Britain and Ireland to the United States of Supreme Grand Council of Swedenborgian Rite. Made first appearance on the stage with his father, in Ab- bey's Theatre, New York City. SOUSA, JOHN PHILIP-Musical Director and Composer, 20 West 34th street, New York City; resi- dence Hotel Netherland. Born in Washington, D. C., Nov. 6, 1856. Educated in Washington. (Married.) Was teacher of harmony in 1871 and conductor of an orchestra in 1873; became first violin of the orchestra conducted by Jacques Offenbach, the French composer, during the latter's tour of the United States; after- ward conducted for theatrical companies, and became musical director of the "Church Choir Pinafore Co," attaining wide celebrity and success; appointed leader and band master of the United States Marine Corps Band in 1880. Organized his present military concert band in 1892, and is now director of "Sousa and His Band." His published compositions number several hundred, and include orchestral suites, "Te Deum,"
songs, waltzes and a very large number of marches; among his light operas may be mentioned "El Capi- tan," "The Bride-Elect" and "The Charlatan." Mem- ber Manuscript Club of New York City, and Gridiron Club, Hiram Lodge and Columbia Commandery, Knights Templar, of Washington, D. C.
