Early in life worked for the Pacific Steamship Co .; afterward became an officer on their ships; and still later entered firm of Bernard & Mantel, teas and coffees, San Francisco, to manage branch of the firm at Stockton, Cal .; then man- aged San Francisco branch for Thomson & Taylor Spice Co., of Chicago, for 6 years; joined Carter, Macy & Co., teas, New York, Japan and China, and had charge of its western trade out- side of Chicago; in 1896 established Chicago branch for C. F. Blanke Tea & Coffee Co., of St. Louis, of which was gen. mgr. until 1905; since in business for self under firm name of Geo. En- tered ins. business, 1862, at Cleveland, as office boy with May & Coe; came to Chicago, 1866, representing the Cleveland and Commercial Mutual Ins. cos. of Cleveland; in 1868 became local agt. for the Detroit Fire & Marine Ins. Co. (which he is at present, thus making him the oldest insurance agt. in Chicago, holding direct agency of the co.). Became associated with C. H. Hinckley, as C. H. Hinckley & Co .; then was mem. of Magill, Hall & Lewis, vessel agts., un- til 1870; in business for self until in 1871 formed partnership with J. K. Hathaway, as Lewis & Hathaway; the great fire dissolved partnership; alone until 1873, and then as Lewis & Prindiville for 1 year; since then has con- ducted insurance agency alone. Chiefly instru- mental in organizing and placing on a perma- nent basis, in 1871, the Chicago Fire Ins. Pa- trol, and was its sec., 1874-81. Republican. Congregationalist. Mason. LEWIS, John Calvin, supt. for N. K. Fair- bank & Co .; born North Bend, Hamilton Co., O., Apr. 17, 1836; son Joseph and Mary (Wakefield) Lewis; grad. Miami Univ., Oxford, O., 1860; studied law, 1860-1; married 1863, Alice E., daughter Dr. John H. F. Thornton, of North Bend, O., and granddaughter of Pres. William Henry Harrison; children: Thornton, Joseph D .. Charles Rea, Mary W. (Mrs. George Van Ha- gen), Frank E. While studying law in the of- fice of his uncle, S. F. Lewis, of Clinton, III., the war broke out, and in July 1861 mustered into service as 2d lieut .; Aug. 5, 1861, promoted 1st lieut. just after the surrender of Ft. Donel- son, and capt., Apr. 3, 1862; was in numerous battles, but because of ill health resigned Oct. 1862, and returned North. Came to Chicago, 1870, and was connected with the lumber firms of Newman & Summalt, and Holmes & Co., be- coming identified, 1875, with N. K. Fairbank & Co .; supt. St. Louis branch, 1878-80; asst. supt.
