Joined the Salvation Army in England in 1879; re- turned to America in its service and was rap- idly promoted; was one of the men in charge of its pioneer movement in the U.S., and for 13 years was a brigadier in the Salvation Army, and had charge of the West, with headquarters in Chicago, 1889-97. Being an American, affil- iated with the Volunteers of America when founded in 1897 by Commander and Mrs. Bal- lington Booth, and was placed in charge of Chi- cago and the Northwest territory, with rank of colonel, and in 1903 was elected vice-pres. of Volunteers of America with rank of maj .- gen. Was appren- ticed to learn carriage and wagon builders' trade in May 1864, serving 3 years; came to America July 1, 1870; established carriage and wagon shop in July 1876, at Northwood, Ia .; continued same until Dec. 1884, when, with brother William, started a wagon and harrow factory at Fergus Falls, Minn .; continued same for 2 years, then organized the Fergus Falls Wagon Co .; withdrew 1890, and together with J. H. Featherstone, leased and operated the Fergus Falls Flouring Mill; in same year sold out interest to Mr. Featherstone; came to Chi- cago and took position with the Weber Wagon Co. and remained until Jan. 1, 1892, when, in company with J. H. Durfee, engaged in the manufacture of plumbers' woodwork and cab- inet ware; Mr. Durfee retired, 1894, and O. F.
