Entered as a boy service of Robert Mitchell Furniture Co., Cincinnati, one of the largest in country, and learned trade of finisher; worked at trade in Cincinnati until the breaking out of the Civil War; enlisted in 3 months' service in 6th Ohio Vol. Inf. Re-enlisted in the same regt. and served until regt. was discharged at the expira- tion of 3 years' service (1st 6 months in W. Va., remainder of time in S.W.); took part in the battles of Shiloh (Pittsburg Landing), Stone River (Murfreesboro) and Chickamauga, Look- out Mountain and Missionary Ridge. After the war traveled for Mitchell Mfg. Co. for 9 years. In 1877, with Jacob C. Wirts, formed the firm of Wirts & Scholle, furniture dealers, firm changing to H. E. Scholle & Co., Jan. 1894; re- tired, 1909.
