Specially identified with development of both bipolar and multipolar dynamos. Patentee of a varipolar motor or dynamo, and a semi-auto- matic machine for winding small armatures, spools, etc .; also patentee of improvements on arc lamps. Mem. Am. Inst. Elec. WAIT, Horatio Loomis, lawyer; born New York City, Aug. 8, 1836; son Joseph and Har- riet Heileman (Whitney) Wait; ed. Trinity School, New York, and Columbia Coll. Gram- mar School, fitting for coll .; came to Chicago, 1856, and was engaged in office of J. Young Scammon; enlisted, 1861, in Co. D, 60th Ill. Inf., but shortly afterward paymaster, with rank of master, in U.S.N .; served under Ad- mirals Dupont and Farragut in blockading Sa- vannah, Pensacola and Mobile, and later on Ad- miral Dahlgren's flagship at bombardment of Ft. Sumter, and siege of Charleston to its ca- pitulation; after war on U.S. ship Ino, Euro- pean squadron; promoted paymaster with rank of lieut .- commander, 1865; later on various du- ties until 1870, when resigned; came to Chica- go and resumed legal studies in office of Bar- ker & Tuley; married May 7, 1860, Chara Co- nant Long; children: James Joseph, Henry Heileman. Admitted to Ill. bar, Aug. 22, 1870; formed partnership with Joseph N. Barker un- der firm name of Barker & Wait, which later became Barker, Buell & Wait. Since June 1876, one of the masters in chancery of the Circuit Court of Cook Co. Vestryman St. Paul's Epis- copal Church, Hyde Park, and has been en- gaged in its Sunday school work, and previ- ously was, for some years, supt. of the Tyng Mission Sunday School. Companion Loyal Le- gion; actively aided in organization of Ill. Na- val Reserve. Was one of the founders of the Charity Organization Soc., later merged into

Steel Co .; then commercial agt. G.N.Ry., St. Paul; since 1892 mgr. freight dept. Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co., wholesale hardware (in which is a stockholder); for 7 yrs. mgr. freight dept.
