PELTZER, Otto, abstract examiner and con- veyancer; born near Aix-la-Chappelle, Ger., Nov. 29, 1836; son Chas. Eugen and Maria Ag- nes (Heinen) Peltzer; (Mr. P. traces his an- cestors back connectedly to 1466, by means of the genealogical history of the Peltzer fam- ily, a quarto volume of some 400 pages, pub- lished at Aix-la-Chappelle in 1900); ed. public schools in Germany until 14 years old, coming to Chicago with parents, 1850; married New Orleans, La., 1860; children: Oscar E., Mrs. Lottie Peltzer Smith; also Mrs. Laura Peltzer Mitchell and Mrs. Louise Peltzer White (both now deceased); has 8 grand children now liv- ing. Was draftsman in office of Recorder of Cook Co., 1853-7; studied law, 1857-60; chief of map dept., City Board of Public Works, 1860- 76; sold set of abstract books to the county, 1875; deputy co. recorder, 1876-8; founding the Co. Abstract Dept .; resigned 1878, and estab- lished the business of Otto Peltzer & Co., ex- aminers of abstracts and conveyancers, from which he has retired since first edition. Col- lector of taxes for N. Chicago, 1868; elected on "Greeley Ticket" mem. Ill. Legislature, serv- ing in double session, 1873-4, and introducing successfully, among other bills, the law for compulsory education in Ill .; also law com- pelling surrendering of unclaimed bodies of convicts and paupers to medical colleges. In 1872 published Peltzer's Atlas of Chicago, em- bracing all subdivisions within the city limits, the records of which were destroyed by the great fire of 1871, but copies of which he had preserved. This is said to be the largest work ever published in book form, and 100 copies were sold at $400 each. Extensive contributor to magazines on social, political and literary subjects, especially on stage affairs and dra- matic literature. Author of The Moralist and The Theatre, 1887; also. several plays, some of which have been produced in Chicago and else- where; also pamphlets and translations from German, The Mason's Lord's Prayer, one of them.
