Started on trip around the world on dispatch boat McCulloch, in Jan. 1898; was on board that vessel during war against Spain, and in battle of Manila Bay, see Vol 1905.


Japan, returning to Philippines in Nov. for fall campaign. Attended the mil. expdns. of occu- pation until the following April, when he was sent to the Transvaal; joined the Boers in in- terest of his paper.
