McNEIL, John, wholesale grocer; born Ar- drie, Scotland, May 22, 1839; son Daniel and Jane (Crichton) McNeil; came to Dundee, Ill., in 1848; ed. district school at Dundee, at Elgin Acad. and at business coll. in Chicago; mar- ried Mar. 1, 1864, Janet Crichton, of Dundee, Ill. (now deceased); 4 children: Leo John, Walter William, Howard Crichton (all Harvard men), and Maud Janet (Mrs. William A. Jones, Buffalo, N.Y.). In 1863 he established business with his brother, Malcolm, in Elgin, under firm name of M. & J. McNeil; sold out in 1872 to establish the firm of McNeil & Higgins, which was incorporated 1888, and of which is vice-pres. Dir. McNEIL, Malcolm, pres. McNeil & Higgins Co .; born Ardrie, Scotland, Sept. 12, 1832; son Daniel and Jane (Crichton) McNeil; ed. Scot- land; family removed to Dundee, Ill., 1848, and purchased land 3 miles north of that village; married 1859, Catherine, daughter of A. R. Dempster, of Dundee, Ill. (she died 1870) ; mar- ried 2d, 1871, Orel, daughter of Charles W. Martin, of Wayne, Ill .; children: Nora, Mal- colm Gordon, Ella, Marvin John, Charles Hig- gins, Jeanie. Worked on farm until 1858; es- tablished small grocery store at Elgin, Ill., which grew to be the largest general store in that place; sold his Elgin business in 1872, and with Charles Higgins established in Chicago the wholesale grocery house of McNeil & Hig- gins (incorporated in 1888), of which is pres. Also owns 3 large dairy farms near Elgin, ad- joining which is his country residence, "Gle- nora Springs." Residence: 1232 LaSalle Av. Office: State St. Bridge.
