WHITNEY, Loren Harper, lawyer; born Ber- lin, Erie Co., O., Sept. 12, 1839; son James W. and Betsey (Harper) Whitney; ed. schools of native place and of DeKalb Co., Ill., to which family moved in 1848; left home at 16; went to Miss. and executed a contract for building a levee; went across plains to Cal. in 1855; en- gaged in gold-mining and made enough money to enable him to enter Mt. Morris Coll., com- pleting the course in 2 years; studied law with Gen. Stephen A. Hulbut at Belvidere, Ill., and at Asbury Univ., Ill .; married 1867, Mary Mun- son; children: Lillian W. (Mrs. Herriman), Ma- bel (Mrs. M. W. Sayles). Admitted to bar, 1860, and began practice, but when war broke out entered army as capt. in 8th Ill. Vol. Cav., with which served in Army of the Potomac; later organized 140th Ill. Vol. Inf. and was commis- sioned its col .; led it to front in Miss. and in 1864 was in command of a force which inter- cepted and, after several skirmishes, drove away Gen. Forrest and his cavalry, who were then committing depredations on railroad and telegraph lines and destroying communications of the Union Army; later was engaged against Gen. Price in Mo .; served in 12 great battles and 40 skirmishes and was twice wounded. After leaving the service settled in Chicago, and has since been in active practice of law. Republic- an. Mem. G.A.R. (Farragut Post.) Wrote a his- tory of the war, the first volume of which was written during his early service in the field and published in 1863; in 1875 went to Topeka, Kan., and prepared a 900-page compendium of Kansas Reports.
