RANDOLPH, Smith Martin, architect; born near New Brunswick, N.J., 1837; son Lewis Stelle and Hanah (Gilman) Randolph; common school edn .; came to Chicago in 1854 to study architecture in the office of an older brother, Mahlon Randolph; married St. Louis, Feb. 9, 1870, Hattie E. Johnson (died in 1876); 1 child: Hattie (died 1881); married 2d, Chicago, Sept. 14, 1882, Mrs. Harriet Maher Smith, whose daughter has since been called Dolly Randolph, and is known as a violinist; their oldest son, Paul, died in 1890; surviving children: Grant and Grace. Served 3 years in Civil War as mem. of the famous Chicago Board of Trade Battery; in 1865 he joined his brother in St. Louis, the firm of Randolph Bros. continuing 6 years; pres. St. Louis Board of Police Com- missioners, 1870-1; after the great fire of 1871 he returned to Chicago, resuming his profes- sion and gaining a reputation for advanced ideas in safe construction, and making a spe- cialty of heavy mercantile and mfg. bldgs .; re- cently his practice has been largely as con- sulting architect in reinforced concrete. Has perfected and patented a system of reinforced concrete floor construction (fireproof), substi- tuting hollow concrete beams, laid side by side, in place of ordinary use of wooden joists, beams and boards.
