PLECKER, James Henry, physician; born Harrisonburg, Va., Apr. 14, 1842; son John R. and Sarah G. (Gilkeson) Plecker; entered pri- vate school at Harrisonburg, 1850; came west with family, settling at Lexington, McLean Co., Ill., Apr. 1856, and about 2 years later at Abingdon, Ill .; worked on farm summers and attended school winters, and in winter of 1858- 9 attended Hedding Sem., now Hedding Coll., Abingdon, Ill .; learned father's trade of tinner and worked at it in several stores, doing plow- ing and farm work in summer, until enlisted Aug. 12, 1861, in 33d Ill. Vol. Inf. as a private, serving 3 years and 4 months; reënlisted as a veteran, and was discharged for disability at end of 3 years and 4 months; served as musi- cian part of time, and at siege of Vicksburg was detailed in corps hosp., where began study of medicine, which later completed at Rush Med. Coll., graduating as M.D., Feb. 1877; mar- ried Prairie City, Ill., Jan. 1, 1867, Mary Ellen Washburn; 1 daughter: Leila Ella (Mrs. Peter Ambrose Dignam). In 1865 joined father in hardware store, and in 1868 became mem. of firm of Plecker, Hunt & Co., conducting dry goods and general store at Bushnell, Ill. Since graduation from med. coll. has been engaged in general practice of medicine. Mem. Chicago Med. Soc., A.M.A. Republican. Methodist. Ma- son. Mem. G.A.R., and has been surgeon of U. S.
