Quoting from an article written by William Bancroft and printed in the Hampshire Gazette, 4 April 1890: "Perez - I well remember as a diminutive specimen of an hilarious old- timer. This distinguished citizen hailed from Williamsburg, through his ancestry. He worked for my father, occasionally, during my boyhood and he was always addressed as simply "Pea". I remember hearing him tell that, when his grandfather was buried in Williamsburg, at his funeral the minister, "Old Parson Lord" I think, began the exercises by giving out this comforting composition of Watts:

Behold the aged sinner goes Laden with guilt and heavy woes Down to the regions of the dead With endless curses on his head.

"Pea" died in Dec. 1839, during a protracted and terrible snow storm. A week after, I was one of a team of men and boys that hauled his corpse to the grave on a "cutter bottom". "Pea's" widow, well, she was a widow who looked ahead, sometimes. Deacon Rufus Burnell lived in her neighborhood. He had buried his wife, a saintly woman, three weeks before. While "Pea" was still unburied the good deacon called to offer his sympathy and assistance. The widow was in distress for both, and to prove the depth of her loss she tearfully inquired of the deacon if his wife, before her long anticipated death, had said anything about his taking a second wife."

THOMAS HATHAWAY

Mimeographed sheets distributed by the Hathaway Fam- ily Association to its members show that Daniel" Hathaway, b. 22 April 1745; m. (int. 30 July 1768), Mary Borden, was son of Benjamin5 (Thomas+, Abraham3, John2, Nicholas1) and Abigail (Eddy) Hathaway. Benjamin5 Hathaway was of Bridgewater when he m. 22 Nov. 1743, Abigail Eddy of Halifax. She was b. 13 March 1725, dau. of Benjamin4 (Obadiah3, Samuel2, Wil- liam1) and Abigail (Hathaway) Eddy.

Benjamin5 must have died soon after his son Daniel6 was born, for the Berkley Church Records contain the marriage of the widow Abigail Hathaway, 17 May 1747, to Timothy Ingra- ham. Abigail and Timothy Ingrim signed the deeds with Daniel" Hathaway of Freetown and his wife, Mary, 15 May 1770, conveying property where his grandmother, Hannah (Briggs) Hathaway, lived with his cousin, Jemima, spinster.

Daniel" Hathaway was apparently alive as late as August 1775, for the Pelham History, page 347, states "that fifteen ad- ditional Pelham men, including Daniel Hathaway, were dis- patched to the seat of war near Boston under Capt. David Cow- den in Col. Benj. Ruggles Woodbridge's regiment". No death record of Daniel has been found, but the Vital Records of Pel- ham include the marriage intention of Mary Hathaway, 12 July 1777, to Daniel There of Chesterfield. He was from Braintree and probably returned there.

We can infer that Thomas Hathaway came to Chesterfield with his mother; that he remained here with his cousin, Timo- thy Engram (son of Timothy Ingraham, who m. (1) 10 Jan. 1739/40, in Berkley, Jemima5 Hathaway, sister of Benjamin3 above). That Chesterfield sent a man to Pelham and to Free- town in search of help for his family during his (Timothy's) long and fatal illness, is in keeping with the above; that his father had died when he was young, and his grandfather died when his father was young, would explain why touch was lost with other Hathaways during this time.
