HEALY FAMILY


WILLIAM1 HELE, or HEALY, came from Devonshire, Eng .; b. about 1613. He was first of Lynn, then of Roxbury, and

finally of Cambridge, where he died 28 Nov. 1683, ae. 70, in- testate. He married five times, the first in 1643, the last in 1677. He was a prison-keeper at Cambridge as early as 1674, which office he held until 29 Dec. 1682, when he was removed from this position for gross misconduct and "sentenced to be severely whipped 20 stripes" and became an inmate of the same prison.


Of his children, a son Nathaniel? was baptized 6 Feb. 1658 in the First Church in Cambridge, where William1 and his third wife, Grace (Buttress) Healy, were both members. He was wounded in King Philip's War, Dec. 1675; m. 14 July 1681, Rebecca Hagar and lived in Newton. Their youngest son, Joshua3, married in Newton and in 1726 moved to the Dudley Tract of land, fifty miles west of Newton.


Joshua3 Healy and his wife, Sarah (Davis) Healy, had four sons, (1) Joshua, Jr.4, who settled his family in Chesterfield in 1764, (2) Joseph, (3) Maj. Nathaniel, (4) Samuel.

(1) in Dud- ley, 19 Dec. 1747, Sarah Newell, b. in Roxbury, 4 Mar. 1727, dau. of Benjamin and Sarah Newell. She d. 23 Oct. 1777. He m. (2) (int. 24 Nov. 1777), Widow Bersheba Wilson, "former- ly of Dudley but now of this town". She died after 28 Mar. 1797 when she signed a deed to Ezra and Robert Starkweather.


Capt. Joshua Healy made his will on 23 May 1791 in which there was no mention of son David, nor daughters Abigail and Lydia. He left no provision for his widow, Bersheba (or Bath- sheba). She appealed to the court to claim her right of dower in the real estate and "desire an allowance out of the personal estate". The court granted her request. Children, all except the last, were b. in Dudley :

This property was in the part of the town now known as Sugar Hill.


Phebee, the colored woman who had lived with Joshua+, died at the home of Ebenezer, 17 Jan. 1821, said to be a hundred years old.
