In 1955, Rev. Edward Williams, Canon of Albany, N. Y., sent for our Chesterfield records, a copy of a transcript of the Family Bible of John House and Lydia Rhodes from which the following was copied :
"The Bible from which these records were copied was doubtless the wedding gift of John House, 3rd, when he was married to Lydia Rhodes in 1800. They were of Chesterfield, Mass., where they resided at least as late as October 1823, when two of their daughters were admitted to the Church. Per- haps the next year the family removed, settling at Thomson, O., in the Western Reserve. The Bible passed to the only son, John House, 4th, who married a Jane Electa Moseley, who had been born at Peru, Mass., but whose family had moved first to Men- tor, O., then to Thomson. John and Jane Electa lived for a time in Leroy, O., then in Painesville, O. The Bible was there, left by them to their daughter Elizabeth (Mrs. Thomas Bald- win) who made the original transcription of the record, Aug. 28th, 1902, from which the following copy is derived. Shortly afterward it was given by her to her brother, the Rev. John Henry House, D.D., the noted Congregational missionary to Tur- key and the Balkans. He was then residing at Salonica, Greece, being the founder and principal of the American Farm School there. When James Hall, at the school, burned in 1915 the Bible was lost. It had narrowly escaped destruction, for in the 1820s, when its original owner was travelling as a pioneer to the Western Reserve in two Conestoga wagons, they were fol- lowing the shore line of Lake Erie when a sudden and severe lake storm came up. The waters rose so fast that only one of
