An item in the town records reads as follows: "This day (June 22, 1820) appeared before me Mr. Charles Williams and Mrs. Mary Prentiss, published by Alvan Rice, Town Clerk, both of Chesterfield, and declared them- selves married and in solemn concent as husband and wife in presents of Asa Todd, Elder. Witnesses present, Mark Wil- liams and Mary Higgins." A private record says that the first wife of Charles Williams died, 7 Jan. 1820.

1. DANIEL WINTER and his wife, Mehitable Winter, came to Chesterfield from Killingley, Conn. On 9 May 1763, he was one of a "Committee to Provide Preaching". They must have had three children before coming to Chesterfield as the records state that "Daniel Winter and wife Mahitable were warned to depart ye town, 13 Dec. 1764, with their children, Rhoda & Susannah & Edy." There are no records that they did depart. A Church Meeting record, 3 Jan. 1770, says "Voted to withdraw our watch and care over Daniel Winter as a Christian Brother for his contempt of the authority of this Branch of the Church of Christ Voted, also to return his letter of recom- mendation and what we have done, to the sd. Church of Kil- lingley from whence he came, desiring them to deal with him as the Gospel Directs. B. Mills, Clerk." Children, born in Chesterfield :

ELISHA2 WITHERELL, son of Samuel1 and Rebecca (Fer- ris) Witherell, b. in Hanover, 16 June 1739, d. 28 July 1831 (death not recorded in Chesterfield) ; m. in Hanover, 30 Dec. 1772, Rebecca Stetson, dau. of Nathaniel Stetson, and widow of Joseph Studley, who was killed by lightning 16 June 1765. She d. 18 Apr. 1803. He sold land here as early as 1769; supposed to have lived in a cabin against a huge rock in the southeast part of town. Children :
