ALLEN, MAJOR SOLOMON5 (Joseph4, Dea. Samuel 3 2 1), b. in Northampton, 16 Feb. 1751; m. 15 Aug. 1771, Beulah Clapp. Major Allen was an officer of merit in the Rev. War. Later in life he became a minister of the gospel. The 1790 census lists him as of Chesterfield with a family of three sons and three daughters. None of the family remained here.
ALLEN, REV. THOMAS5 (Joseph+ Dea. Samuel 3 2 1), preached here in 1763, before the church was founded. Like his brother, Major Solomon Allen, he was an ardent patriot in the Revolu- tion. Mr. Allen was famous as the "Fighting Parson". Later he became the first settled minister of Pittsfield, Mass., where a marker has been placed in his memory.
AMEDON FAMILY
1. EBENEZER AMEDON4, son of Ithamer3 (Philip2, Roger1), and Ruth (Curtis) Amedon, d. about 1809. He m. Sarah Flynn, b. 26 May 1743, dau. of Richard and Sarah Flynn. She d. 9 Nov. 1818. At the time of his marriage he was of Woodstock, Conn. In 1763 they removed to Goshen where he died. They lived about one the line between Chesterfield and Goshen which, no doubt, accounts for the fact that some records of the family are in Chesterfield. His father must have come with him as Itha- mar Amedown was chosen Fence Viewer, 7 March 1773. Ebe- nezer Amedown's will is recorded in Northampton in which he provided well for his wife with plenty of corn, rye, wheat, pork, beef, "also what apples she needs to use and cider she needs to drink." Children No. 4 and 5 were born here. The others, ex- cept No. 7, were bapt. in the Chesterfield Congregational Church :

ARCHELAUS ANDERSON FAMILY
1. ARCHELAUS ANDERSON may have been brother of Jona- than Anderson (No. 6). He came here before 1765 as his inten- tions of marriage, recorded in Shrewsbury, 30 May 1765 to Miriam Biglo, call him "of Chesterfield". The Weekly Hamp- shire Gazette of 16 Aug. 1870, said "The second person to be buried in the Center Burying Ground was wife of Archelaus Anderson who died probably in 1767." He m. (2) 13 Apr. 1769, Sarah Webber of Murrayfield. There seems to be some confu- sion as to whether his name was Archelaus or Archibald. At the time of enlistment in the Rev., 16 Apr. 1781, he was 45 yrs. of age; by occupation, sitwork cooper, carpenter, wagoner. He was active in town and church affairs. The second town meet- ing, 25 Oct. 1762, was held at "ye dwelling house of Archelas

Most of their children were born in Huntington. They lived near the bridge in Indian Hollow when the family was striken with trichinosis in 1907. In early life he became an apprentice in the office of the Hampshire Gazette in Northampton; later en- tered the Eagle office in Lenox, Mass .; subsequently becoming a partner in a job printing office. In 1853, Mr. Axtell returned to Northampton and for 13 yrs. was foreman of the Gazette office; in 1865, returning to Pittsfield and becoming half owner of the Eagle until 1885, when he became sole proprietor and remained so until his death."

BAILEY FAMILY
1. JOSEPH6 BAILEY, son of Dea. Joseph5 (Joseph+, John3 2, Thomas1), and Elizabeth (White) Bailey, bapt. in Scituate 1743. He graduated from Harvard College in 1765 and came shortly thereafter to Chesterfield where he and his wife, Lucy, had ten children :
2. Joseph Silvester, b. 2 Aug. 1771, d. 23 Mar. 1823; m. (int. 30 Dec. 1797), Hannah Parsons (No. 17). He was the second postmaster of Chesterfield from Oct. 14, 1818 to Feb. 1822; a member of the Legislature from 1813 to 1816; and innkeeper of the Bailey Tavern, later owned by Dyar Bancroft. The Tavern burned in 1859. Mr. Bancroft rebuilt and the home has, since that time, been occupied by the Bancroft family.
A report was circulated that, after the death of Joseph Syl- vester Bailey, his body was taken up and anatomized and to con- vince the people that it was a false report, the grave was opened on Apr. 2nd, ten days after burial, and the body was found in the grave as it was when first laid there.
