David Stearns sold his property in Chesterfield to Caleb Damon, 10 Dec. 1794, and moved, in 1795, to Stamford, Vt., where his children, Sophia, Cynthia, Alvin, Calvin, and Orpha, were born. About 1810 he and his son, Luther, moved to Scipio, Cayuga Co., N. Y. The eldest son, Melzer (or Melzar), joined them in 1811 and about 1815 David Stearns and these two sons, all with their families, set out by way of Olean, N. Y., where they built a raft, down the Allegany and Ohio Rivers to a point near Cincinnati, Ohio, whence they came northward to Clinton Co., Ohio. Children of David and Susanna:

STOCKWELL FAMILY
The Stockwell families of Chesterfield were descended from William Stockwell, an immigrant from Scotland, born about 1650. According to tradition, he was "shanghaied" aboard a vessel sailing for America. He was indentured to pay for his passage. After thus earning his freedom he followed the sea for several years, and then settled at Ipswich, Mass. Here his six children were born. In 1715, he removed to the new township of Sutton. His son, William Jr., had bought land there and interested his brother John and his father, so all three families settled there.
