Salome Angell, dau. of Christian and Hannah (Bennett) Angell of Norwich. She d. 8 June 1845, ae. 66. One of their daughters married Samuel Bottom. The Porter home was in the north part of the town. "Samuel Por- ter, and his family after him, lived all their lives here in a wild, picturesque place, a half mile away from any highway, away out of the world, apparently." SAMUEL REED FAMILY
1. SAMUEL5 REED (Ezekiel4, John3, William2 1), b. in Abing- ton, 25 Dec. 1756. His father died when he was seven and he had been bound to Deacon Whitmarsh, a shoemaker, but when war broke out, he was twenty, and Deacon Whitmarsh turned out his bound boy to go to war. He served three years in the Revolution, at one time being separated from his command for several weeks. He came to Chesterfield about 1778, m. 18 June 1781, Betsey Smith of Grafton (possibly No. 2). She d. 23 Jan. 1835, ae. 72. He d. 25 Apr. 1826.
From Town Meeting records: "Whereas it was agreed on by the Town that all the Striped Squirrels that any Person or Persons should kill and bring in within such a time in the year 1793 for their Heads they should Two pence a peace I have kiled fifty three within time above mentioned and conveyed them to Mr Phelps and he said I must bring them myself Afterward I carried them myself and he was not at home the Return was made and my number not considered and I was obliged to pay the Money. The Rhoades families of Chesterfield are descended from the two brothers, Samuel and Joseph, 7th and 9th children, and only surviving sons of Joseph3 (Samuel2, Henry1) and Mary (Fuller) Rhodes, who were married in Lynn, Mass., 14 Nov. 1723, and lived in Marblehead after their marriage. Mary (Fuller) Rhodes was dau. of Benjamin and Susannah (Ballard) Fuller.

6. Elder SAMUEL RHODES (Samuel4, Joseph3, Samuel2, Henry1), b. 7 Sept. 1776, d. in Skaneateles, N. Y., 27 Mar. 1850. He was one of the early settlers of Skaneateles, moving there from Chesterfield in 1806. He was chosen elder of the Presby- terian Church in 1820 and held that office until his death. Was a farmer and wealthy for that time, and exerted a strong in- fluence in political and religious circles for many years. He m. (1) (int. 7 Dec. 1799), Lucy Porter, dau. of Dr. Samuel Porter of Williamstown. She d. in Westhampton, 28 Aug. 1806. He m. (2) 21 Jan. 1813, Electa Cleveland. She d. in Skaneateles, 22 May 1863. She taught school for several years before mar- riage, possessed a vigorous constitution, both physical and mental. Children by first wife:
